Temporary Changes To The Texas Eagle Schedule, Service Alerts, and Notices

Booking on the Texas Eagle
In some sections, the Texas Eagle may run as two or more trains as one.
Trains 21 and 22 travel daily between Chicago and San Antonio, while 412 and 422 operate three times a week to and from LA. There are not two trains; two sections run as one between Chicago and San Antonio.
How that works, a coach and sleeper car is taken off train 21 and added 1 Sunset Limited; those cars are known as 421. Eagle 422 is a sleeper and coach car on the Sunset Limited from LA to San Antonio and added to train 22, which heads to Chicago.
Accommodations for the Texas Eagle
Coach Class Seating
Coach seating – features comfortable reclining seats with ample legroom and a fold-down tray, individual reading lights, and 120v electric outlets.
Sleeper Car (Rooms)
All rooms include:
- Fresh linens and towels
- Complimentary meals between Chicago and San Antonio, and Traditional Dining from San Antonio and LA.
- Lounge access in Chicago and Los Angeles
- Dedicated car attendant
Family Bedroom – These rooms provide seating and berths for two adults and two smaller kids. They also offer access to a shower.
Bedroom – these rooms give you twice the space of a Roomette with seating by day, upper and lower berths by night, and an in-room sink, restroom, and shower.
Roomette – these accommodations offer passengers seating by day that turns into upper and lower berths at night. Additionally, you have access to a shower in your car.
Accessible Room – these rooms offer accommodations for passengers with a disability; accessible Bedrooms are located on the lower level of the train and provide ample space for a wheelchair, with a sofa for two by day and upper and lower berth for the night.
Bikes, Pets, And Luggage
Bicycle – Space is available for standard, full-size bicycles (up to 50 lbs, 70 inches x 41 inches x 8.5 inches). Amtrak stores bikes in designated bike racks/areas inside Coach passenger cars or the baggage car (if available).
Pet – Amtrak allows dogs and cats up to 20 pounds (combined weight of pet and carrier) for trips up to seven hours.
Checked Baggage – Two bags up to 50 lbs. and 75 linear inches are allowed per person for free. Charges
apply for additional and oversized luggage. Not all locations can handle checked baggage. Click the station links below to see if they offer checked baggage service.
Wheelchair Ramp – is available to assist passengers in boarding and detraining with a wheeled mobility device.
Food offerings on the Texas Eagle
Cafe – is found in the cafe/dining car between San Antonio and Chicago and on the lower level of the Sightseer lounge between San Antonio and LA. The cafe features a variety of meals, snacks, and beverages for sale, and it is available for all customers from early morning until late at night.
Dining for sleeper passengers
Depending on how far you take the Texas Eagle, you could eat one or both Amtrak meal styles.
Meals on trains 21/22/421/422 between Chicago, IL, and San Antonio, TX
Flex dining – is complimentary dining for sleeping passengers to enjoy in private rooms or the Sleeper Lounge. Flex dining meals are warmed-prepared meals for breakfast and dinner, plus complimentary beverages.
Meals on trains 421/422 between San Antonio, TX, and Los Angeles, CA
Traditional dining – is complimentary dining for customers in private rooms with set prices for coach passengers. They are chef-prepared meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with table service, selections for kids, and a wide array of wine, beer, and spirits.
Temporary Amtrak Texas Eagle Schedule Changes
Effective Select Mondays and Wednesdays April 24 – October 4, 2023
Due to track work being performed by Union Pacific, schedule changes impact Texas Eagle Trains 21/421 and 22 on select Mondays and Wednesdays, April 24 through October 4, as outlined below. Schedule times listed on Amtrak.com have been updated to reflect these changes.
June 27, September 10, and October 3
- Train 21, which usually operates between Chicago and San Antonio, will terminate at Fort Worth, with alternate transportation provided via Bus 3021 between Fort Worth and San Antonio, making all intermediate stops.
- Train 421, which generally operates between Chicago and Los Angeles, will originate in San Antonio.
June 28, September 11, and October 4
- Train 22, which usually operates between San Antonio and Chicago, will originate at Fort Worth, with alternate transportation provided via Bus 3022 between San Antonio and Fort Worth, making all intermediate stops.
