Silver Meteor Schedule Change
Effective Saturday and Sunday, April 20 – 21 and June 1 – 2, 2024
Due to infrastructure work being performed by CSX, the Silver Meteor schedules will be impacted, as outlined below. The schedules listed on Amtrak.com have been updated to reflect this change.
Train 97 will depart New York four hours later, at 7:15 p.m., operating on a later schedule through Miami, arriving at 10:59 p.m. the following day.
Train 98 will hold an additional 60 minutes at Fredericksburg, departing at 6:49 am and departing later from Washington, DC, at 9:50 am.
The Amtral Silver Metoer’s on-time performance and host railroads
Regardless of how you like to travel, and when it comes to rail travel, sometimes it is not Amtrak’s fault.
The Silver Meteor route uses tracks owned, maintained, and dispatched by freight railroads, known as “host” railroads. The number one cause of delay to Amtrak customers is “freight train interference,” caused by freight railroads not complying with Federal law requiring Amtrak trains to revive preference over freight.
- The Silver Meteor average station on-time station performance.
- From February 2023 to 2024, the average on-time performance was 56.4%, with an average delay of 71 minutes.
- For February 2024, the average on-time performance was 53.9%, with an average delay of 60 minutes.
Here are the top two reasons that the Silver Meteor gets delayed by host railroads of 15 miles and more.
- CSX
- Freight train interference and slow order delay
- FL DOT
- Commuter train interference and slow order delays
- FR
- Slow order delays and commuter train interference.
The information in this section comes from the February 2024 Amtrak Host Railroad Report.

Amtrak Silver Meteor route guide
Over a decade ago, Amtrak created a route guide that takes about many stops and communities the Silver Meteor passes through. I was able to find and save them, so you can have them if you want them, and you can print or download them.
Thank you for coming to this page and my site; I have spent several nights on the Silver Meteor and hope you have a great trip. Consider supporting the site if you like this page and benefit from its free content.
Safe travels and happy planning!
Kev
Hi, I hope you could answer a question for me about the Silver Meteor. We will be getting on the train at 6:35PM in Jesup, Ga heading to NYC. Do you know if we will be served dinner? Thanks for any help you might provide.
In cases like this, your car attendant will often make a dinner reservation for you (if you have a room). Amtrak serves dinner until 9 p.m. for people who board the train before 8:30 p.m. This train has traditional dining but has yet to open to coach passengers.
If you are in coach, you can go to the cafe car anytime after you board; they are open late.
Does the Amtrak travel from Fayetteville, NC to Wallingford, CT?
If not, what are the closest cities for departure and arrival?
You can take Amtrak between those stops, but you’ll save time if you travel to New Haven instead. You would take the Silver Meteor to New York and then transfer to a regional train to New Haven.
