Amtrak in Utah: Routes, Stops, & Tips

Amtrak currently operates four stations in Utah, all served by the California Zephyr. This train is renowned as one of America’s most scenic routes. The Zephyr runs daily between Chicago and Emeryville/San Francisco, traversing some of Utah’s most stunning landscapes.

Utah is famous for its breathtaking red rock deserts, towering canyon walls, and rugged mountain landscapes. Travelers can marvel at the dramatic sandstone formations near Green River and Helper, as the terrain gradually shifts into mountain canyons while the train heads toward Provo. The impressive Wasatch Mountains dominate the landscape as the train approaches Salt Lake City, although this part of the journey often takes place after dark. However, fortunate travelers may get a rare glimpse of these alpine peaks if delays push the train into daylight. This unique combination of desert and mountains makes Utah one of my favorite states to see while taking the California Zephyr.

Green River, UT (GRI)

• Address: 250 South Broadway, Green River, UT 84525
• Station Type: Unstaffed (platform and shelter only)
• Recent Improvements: In April 2024, Amtrak completed a $5 million upgrade that included installing a new concrete platform with tactile edging, guardrails, lighting, signage, accessible parking spots, ramps, and a new shelter.
• Services: The platform offers shelter and accessible parking; however, ticketing and baggage services are not available.
• Green River is a small town that serves as a gateway to outdoor recreation, located approximately 50 miles from Moab and Arches National Park.

Helper, UT (HER) – Unstaffed with a waiting room

• Address: 1 Depot Street, Helper, UT 84526
• Station Type: Unstaffed (historic depot building with waiting room)
• Recent Improvements: The Helper station underwent significant upgrades in April 2024, including an extension of the platform from 25 feet to 550 feet. New guardrails, lighting, signage, accessible parking, and ramps were also installed.
• Services: Historic depot building with waiting room, accessible parking, and a wheelchair lift available
• What’s Nearby: Helper is a historic railroad and mining town known for the Western Mining and Railroad Museum. It’s becoming an arts-and-crafts destination.

Provo, UT (PRO) – Unstaffed platform station with shelter

• Address: 300 West 600 South, Provo, UT 84601
• Station Type: Unstaffed platform station with outdoor shelter
• Services: Basic platform with shelter and parking; there is no indoor waiting room at this station.
• What’s Nearby: Provo is a major city and home to Brigham Young University, providing good access to attractions in Utah Valley and Sundance.

Salt Lake City, UT (SLC) – Staffed Station with waiting room

• Address: 340 South 600 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84101
• Station Type: Staffed station
• Hours: Open for staffed service when trains arrive/depart
• Services: Full ticketing, baggage services, passenger assistance, accessible platform, waiting area
• Location: The station is located at the Salt Lake City Intermodal Hub, providing easy connections to:
  • UTA TRAX light rail
  • UTA FrontRunner commuter rail
  • Greyhound buses
  • Local UTA bus routes
  • GREENbike bike share

Arrival Times:

• Eastbound (Train 6 to Chicago): Approximately 3:00 AM
• Westbound (Train 5 to Emeryville): Approximately 11:00 PM

Important Note: Although Amtrak aims to run its trains on time, it operates on tracks owned by Union Pacific and BNSF. These host railroads are responsible for dispatching trains and occasionally prioritize their freight services over Amtrak, leading to delays.

Booking and Ticketing

Since three of Utah’s four stations are unstaffed, here’s what you need to know:

For Unstaffed Stations (GRI, HER, PRO):

• You must purchase tickets in advance through Amtrak.com, the Amtrak app, or by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL
  • You can buy tickets up to 11 months in advance.
• No checked baggage service available
• Bring all luggage as carry-ons (one personal item and two carry-on bags per passenger)
• The train will not stop unless passengers are boarding or alighting – make sure you have a reservation

For Salt Lake City (SLC):

• Can purchase tickets at the station when staff are present
  • Like other forms of transportation, last-minute bookings can be expensive.
  • You can come in and purchase tickets up to eleven months in advance.
• Checked baggage service is available if your final stop is staffed.
• Full passenger assistance available

California Zephyr Experience Through Utah

The California Zephyr’s passage through Utah is particularly scenic. You’ll see:

Eastern Utah, particularly the Green River area, is known for its high-desert landscapes, featuring dramatic red-rock formations and the winding Colorado River. As you move to Central Utah, around the Helper area, you’ll encounter the Wasatch Mountains, showcasing steep canyons and historic railroad grades. Utah Valley, home to Provo, offers beautiful views of Utah Lake against the backdrop of the Wasatch Front. Finally, in the Salt Lake Valley, you’ll find the metropolitan area, which provides stunning views of the Wasatch Mountains.

Best Views of Amtrak in Utah

The westbound journey (Train 5) typically provides better views of Utah’s landscape in the late afternoon and evening. However, you can enjoy great views in either direction and from both sides of the train.

Seating Options for traveling on Amtrak in Utah

For the best views of Utah’s scenery, visit the Sightseer Lounge with its panoramic windows. This car is accessible to all guests on a first-come, first-served basis and features a café on the lower level.

For private views from your own space, consider booking a roomette, a bedroom, a family bedroom, or an accessible bedroom.

If you want to save money while traveling, coach class also offers excellent views. Since most of Utah’s scenic highlights pass during evening hours westbound, overnight accommodations allow you to enjoy dinner with mountain views.

Connecting to National Parks

While no stations in Utah provide direct access to the state’s famous “Mighty Five” national parks, Salt Lake City offers the best transportation options.

• Yellowstone National Park: Salt Lake City is one of the closest Amtrak stations to Yellowstone (about 320 miles). Rental cars or tours are available.
• Zion National Park: About 300 miles from Salt Lake City
• Arches/Canyonlands: Closest to Green River station (about 50 miles to Moab)

Future Amtrak Service in Utah

In January 2025, the Federal Railroad Administration released a final report proposing 15 new long-distance Amtrak routes nationwide. Two of these routes would significantly expand service in Utah.

Los Angeles to Denver Route:

• Would serve Ogden, Salt Lake City, and Provo
• Travel time: approximately 33 hours
• Would eliminate the current need for an overnight layover in Emeryville when traveling between LA and Denver

Seattle to Denver Route:

• Would also serve Ogden, Salt Lake City, and Provo
• Travel time: approximately 40 hours
• Would restore passenger rail service along corridors that have not had service since 1997, when the Desert Wind and Pioneer routes were discontinued.

These routes are proposed but not yet funded or scheduled. Implementation would require Congressional action and funding.

Historical Context

Utah once had much more extensive passenger rail service. The Desert Wind (Chicago-LA via Salt Lake City) and Pioneer (Chicago-Seattle via Salt Lake City) both served Utah until their discontinuation in 1997. The current California Zephyr route through Utah uses tracks of the historic Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.

Travel Tips for Utah Stations

1. Arrive Early at Unstaffed Stations: Since there’s no station agent, make sure you’re at the platform at least 20 to 30 minutes before the scheduled arrival time.
2. Check Train Status: The California Zephyr may be delayed due to freight traffic and weather. If you need help tracking your Amtrak train, be sure to check out my post on that topic.
3. Pack Light: Although Amtrak has a generous baggage policy, I’ve discovered that packing lighter makes my travel experience much easier, especially when departing from an unstaffed station. For example, if you are leaving from Salt Lake City and your destination is also unstaffed, you may not be able to check bags.
4. Limited Cell Service: Expect spotty cell coverage through much of rural Utah
5. No WiFi: The California Zephyr does not offer WiFi service
6. Food Service: The train features a café with snacks and light meals, as well as traditional dining car service for sleeper and coach passengers, subject to availability.
