The Amtrak Vermonter is a daily train with weekday and weekend schedules between St. Albans, VT, and Washington, DC. It has many intermediate stops, including St. Albans, Essex Junction (Burlington), Springfield, New York, and Washington, DC. The train covers a distance of 608 miles.
The Amtrak Vermonter offers a scenic journey through some of the most picturesque landscapes in the Northeast.
The route showcases diverse scenery as it travels from the northern reaches of Vermont to the bustling heart of Washington, DC.
In Vermont, the train winds through the charming New England countryside, passing quaint towns, rolling hills, and scenic rivers. As it continues south, the lush forests and serene farmland give way to the urban excitement of cities like Springfield and New York. If you are interested, there is an old Vermonter route guide; it still has some fun information.
This article provides information about train accommodations, food services, add-ons, and schedules.
Amtrak Vermonter coach class
The Vermonter coach class offers comfortable seats with a fold-down tray and a seat back pocket.
The car has individual reading lights and a 120v grounded (three-prong) electric outlet on the wall for convenience.
The train also has above-seat luggage storage, plus a shelf at the end of the car to put your bags on.
Kev’s advice on riding coach
I have extensive experience riding Amtrak coach class trains, from long-distance to regional trains like the Vermonter. Here are a few tips I can give you to improve your trip.
Bring an extension cord; three to six feet is enough. The outlet is on the wall, so if you have an aisle seat, you can plug in what you want and only destroy your seatmate once. For either passenger, you can then plug in more than one thing without hogging all the outlets.
A water bottle and snacks can help while waiting at the station or onboard. I often plan to budget a trip to the café car, but sometimes you need something, which is where those snacks come in handy.
Quiet Car
This train also has a quiet car, but you should know a few things.
The car is open to any coach passenger who follows the rules of the Quiet Car, but seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Amtrak asks you to maintain a library atmosphere, so no phone calls, only short conversations in hushed tones, and headphones are necessary. If your phone or device makes noise, put it on silent.
Business class
In addition to the above, you get more when you upgrade to business class, which gives you extra legroom, a comfortable seat, and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages.
Additionally, Business Class customers receive a 25% bonus on Amtrak Guest Rewards points.
Wi-fi & Entertainment
Amtrak offers free Wi-Fi on this train. While free, it does have some restrictions, for it can throttle or not allow streaming. You may not be able to download or upload large files.
Amtrak does not offer streaming entertainment, but here are some entertainment ideas for you.
Food
The Vermonter has a Café Car! Amtrak Café Cars offer a variety of hot and cold meals, snacks, and beverages, including adult drinks.
You can enjoy your purchase at your seat or in the café car.
The café car is open to all passengers for most of the journey, though it may be closed at the beginning and end of the route.
Conductors or the café car attendant will announce its location once onboard.
Bringing Food And Drink On The Train
Amtrak allows you to bring food and drink aboard the train, but Amtrak cannot heat, chill, or store it.
You can carry alcohol on the train but not drink what you brought aboard. If you want an adult beverage, you can purchase it in the café. If you get out of hand or get caught drinking from your stash, Amtrak could remove you from the train.
Amtrak Vermonter add-ons
There are a few things you can add to your next Amtrak trip.
Bikes
Carry-on/Trainside bicycles: You can bring up to 50 lbs. Standard bicycle sizes apply. The maximum tire width is 2″. Check the link for details. Bike service may not be available at all stations, but this can change anytime.
Pets and service animals
Amtrak allows dogs and cats up to 20 pounds (the combined weight of the pet and carrier) for trips up to seven hours.
These spots could be limited; you will know if you can bring a pet when booking. If you plan to bring your pet, you will need to fill out paperwork, and you can get that and more info on Amtrak’s pet policy.
If you have a service or support animal, read Amtrak’s service animal page before booking to ensure that your critter qualifies and that you get everything set before your trip.
Luggage
This train does not offer a checked bag service.
Each passenger may carry on:
- One personal item, 25 lbs. (12 kg) and 14 x 11 x 7 inches
- Two carry-on pieces of luggage, 50 lbs. (23 kg) and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each
If you transfer to the Pacific Surfliner at some point along your journey, the baggage size for that train is up to 28 x 22 x 11 inches each.
Charges apply for additional and oversized luggage; check out Amtrak’s carry-on bag policy for more information.

Thanks for this information! What can you tell me about the seating arrangement for four people in coach? My sister and I are planning a trip on the Vermonter for my twin siblings for their upcoming birthday, and we’d really like to sit facing one another. I have been searching for info on this but haven’t had much luck. Are there quadruplet seating arrangements on either end of the coach cars? Would the conductor turn our seats around if we asked or is it even possible anymore?
Hi Nasia,
I’m happy to help.
The train does not have tables between the seats or seats that face each other. While the seats can turn, conductors tend not to. I have seen people turn seats independently and be told to return them to the proper direction.
However, tables in the cafe car are available for all passengers, so if you get a beverage or something, you could sit in that car for a while.
I hope that helps!
Kevin
