The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner has several daily trains with departures throughout the day. It travels between San Diego and San Luis Obispo, including Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and other intermediate stops. This train also links to Amtrak’s connecting service.

Equipment Used: The Pacific Surfliner
The Pacific Surfliner uses two-level or bi-level equipment, using California or long-distance Superliners.
Coach class
The Pacific Surfliner offers Coach seating, which features:
- Comfortable seats
- A fold-down tray
- Individual reading lights
- 120V grounded (three-prong) electric outlets.
- A place above your seat and a rack in the car for your luggage.
Business class
Business class includes extra legroom, a comfortable seat, and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages; ask the cafe car attendant for more details.
Additionally, Business Class customers receive a 25% bonus on Amtrak Guest Rewards points. Pacific Surfliner Business Class passengers may purchase a day pass for $25 for the Los Angeles – Union Station lounge.
Wi-fi & Entertainment
Amtrak offers free Wi-Fi on this train. While free, it does have some restrictions, as it can throttle or not allow streaming. You may not be able to download or upload large files.
This train does not offer streaming entertainment, but here are some entertainment ideas for you.

Amtrak Thruway Service offers transportation connections to destinations like Bakersfield and Long Beach.
The Pacific Surfliner Cafe Car and food
The cafe car offers:
- A variety of hot and cold meals
- Snacks
- Hot and cold beverages, including adult beverages
- You can consume your purchases in the cafe or at your seat.
Conductors and the cafe car attendant will inform you when it is open and where it is located, generally at one end of the train.
Bringing Food On The Pacific Surfliner
Amtrak allows passengers to bring personal food and drink aboard the train. However, passengers can only consume what they obtain at their seats, not in the cafe.
While you can bring alcohol on the train, you can’t consume it on the rails. If you get caught drinking your own or get out of hand, Amtrak conductors can remove you from the train.

There are a few things that you can add to your next Amtrak trip.
Bringing Bikes on Amtrak
You can bring a bike on your Amtrak trip, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Weight Limit: Your bike can weigh up to 50 pounds.
- Size Limit: Only standard bicycle sizes, with a maximum tire width of 2 inches, are allowed.
- Availability: Bike service may not be available at all stations, and this can change, so check ahead of time.
- Reservation: When you make your reservation, reserve your bike. Do not just show up with your bike, as space might not be available.

Traveling with Pets on Amtrak
If you want to bring your furry friend along, Amtrak allows small dogs and cats:
- Weight Limit: The combined weight of the pet and carrier must be 20 pounds or less.
- Duration: Pets are allowed on trips up to seven hours.
- Paperwork: Ensure you complete all necessary paperwork before arriving at the station.

Luggage
This train does not offer a checked bag service.
Each passenger may carry on:
- One personal item, up to 25 pounds (12 kg), and 14 x 11 x 7 inches
- Two carry-on pieces of luggage, 50 lbs. (23 kg) and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each
If you transfer to the Pacific Surfliner at some point along your journey, the baggage size for that train is up to 28 x 22 x 11 inches each.
