Amtrak Silver Meteor: Schedule, Stops, & Route Guide

The Amtrak Silver Meteor offers a daily scenic and relaxing journey along the Eastern Seaboard. This train connects the vibrant energy of New York City with the sunny charm of Miami, Florida. The trip covers 1,389 miles and takes approximately 28 hours, with 31 stops. Travelers can enjoy a unique perspective of ten states and Washington, D.C., experiencing bustling cities, historic towns, and picturesque landscapes.

Whether traveling a few miles or the whole route, the Silver Meteor delivers comfort and convenience. With accommodations ranging from spacious coach seats to private sleeper cars, a cafe car, and a traditional dining car, this train caters to every type of traveler.

Depending on where you need to go, the Silver Meteor seamlessly connects with Amtrak’s Northeast Regional or Acela services for those navigating the busy Northeast Corridor. While the Amtrak Floridian covers similar stops south of Washington, D.C., it follows a more inland route, giving the Silver Meteor its unique charm.

Amtrak Silver Meteor Accommodations

The Silver Meteor offers several accommodations to reserve for your next trip.

Coach Seating

• Coach seating features:
  • Comfortable reclining seats with ample legroom
  • A fold-down tray
  • Individual reading lights
  • 120V grounded (three-prong) electric outlets.
  • There are two restrooms in each car.
  • NO middle seat!
  • Luggage storage above your seat and at the end of the car
  • Access to the cafe and dining car reservations is limited.

These seats recline significantly to help you sleep; if you’re traveling overnight, bring a pillow and blanket. The seats do not lie flat but recline significantly.

An extension cord will charge your devices, making them more accessible. Snacks can also improve your trip. If you are traveling overnight, a pillow and a blanket will help you feel more comfortable.

Sleeper Car (Rooms)

A room might be ideal if you want more privacy and to lie down at night.

All rooms include:

• Fresh linens and towels
• Complimentary meals—more on that later.
• Lounge access in New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC
• Dedicated car attendant
• All windows have privacy curtains that also block most light.
• Access to a shower
• A place to hang clothing
  • Amtrak supplies hangers
• Pillows
• Water
• The table is between the chairs
• The seats during the day transform into beds at night.

Room types

• Roomettes
  • The smallest of the Amtrak rooms.
  • It’s comfortable for one but cozy for two.
• Bedrooms
  • It gives you twice as much space as a roomette.
  • There is an in-room restroom and shower. In the diagram below, the rooms are A and B.
• Accessible room
  • Accommodations for passengers with mobility issues.
  • These rooms have a bathroom and a shower.

The Silver Meteor uses two similar sleeper cars: the older model shown below and the newer one, which is identical except for a restroom at the end and the absence of toilets in the roomettes.

Add-ons for your Amtrak Silver Meteor trip

There are a few things you can add to your trip.

Bikes

Amtrak allows you to bring standard, full-size bicycles (up to 50 lbs, 70 inches x 41 inches x 8.5 inches) on board. Amtrak stores bikes on designated racks or in areas inside the baggage car. For more information, please check out Amtrak’s bike policy.

Pets

Amtrak allows dogs and cats weighing up to 20 pounds (combined weight of pet and carrier) for trips of seven hours or less, provided the paperwork is submitted. For more information, see Amtrak’s pet policy.

Bringing Your Luggage

Each passenger may carry on:

• One personal item, up to 25 pounds (12 kg), and 14 x 11 x 7 inches
• Two carry-on pieces of luggage, 50 lbs. (23 kg) and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each

Wi-Fi

Amtrak offers free Wi-Fi that supports basic web browsing. Due to limited onboard bandwidth, our Wi-Fi does not support high-bandwidth activities, such as streaming music or videos, or downloading large files.

Cafe

The Silver Meteor cafe offers:

  • It is also closed during the Washington, DC stop.

• Sleeper passengers on the Silver Meteor can enjoy traditional dining.
• The meal service offers onboard chef-prepared meals
• You can find the dining car between the sleepers and coaches.
• The dining car is available to coach passengers for a set price
  • Reservations are limited.

• Meals include all non-alcoholic beverages and extras.

Can I take Amtrak’s Silver Meteor to Tampa?

Yes, well, kind of. If you travel to Tampa, you can take this train to Orlando and board an Amtrak connecting bus to Tampa. This option should be available when you are booking.

Silver Meteor On-Time Performance

In June 2026, the Silver Meteor had a customer on-time performance (OTP) of 37.3%, compared to a trailing 12-month average of 57.4%. Both figures remain well below Amtrak’s minimum standard of 80% for long-distance trains.

In June, passengers who arrived late experienced an average delay of 77 minutes. Over the past 12 months, the average delay for late passengers was 72 minutes.

The Silver Meteor operates on three host railroads, with the main causes of delay differing by segment. Between New York Penn Station and Washington, D.C., the train travels over tracks owned by Amtrak on the Northeast Corridor.

• CSX: In June, freight train interference was the largest category of delays, followed by temporary slow orders.
• Florida Department of Transportation: The primary cause of the delay was interference from commuter trains, followed by problems with routing and dispatching.
• Florida Rail: The main issue was interference from commuter trains, followed by temporary speed restrictions.

In June, the Customer OTP was significantly lower than the train’s average over the past 12 months. Delays can impact cruise departures, flights, rental car pickups, and other connections in Florida, so it’s recommended to allow for extra time in your plans whenever possible.

These preliminary figures are from Amtrak’s June 2026 Host Railroad Report. Customer OTP measures whether passengers arrived on time at their destination, rather than assessing if the train reached every station on schedule.
